Google News Is Returning to Spain

In December 2014, Google News closed its doors in Spain due to the controversial Intellectual Property Law (LPI) approved by the government. The networking giant then confirmed what only seemed like a rumor, pointing to Spanish legislation before the disappearance of service present in more than 70 countries and in 35 different languages, whose creation arose after the information chaos on the network generated in the context of the September 11 attacks in the United States. If you want to know what Google News is and how its return to Spain has been conceived, keep reading.

    What is Google News?

Google News is an informative platform in which news can be read and that allows users of the network to reach interesting content from the famous Google search engine. Available in an application for Android, iOs, and browsers, it is nourished by content from feeds and URLs provided by publishers through a site that centralizes information (called the publisher center) and web tracking.

It is an application that adds value to digital news, by provoking user traffic to a multitude of websites, allowing to generate advertising revenue in a simple way. With it, the digital user has access to:

Current events, news from around the world, and multidisciplinary content from countless publishers

    • The ability to subscribe to specific topics and news providers
    • The option to share items and add them to bookmarks
    • Personalization of content through the section called 'for you'

    How Google News works

Through different functions, Google News allows users to reach countless news of their interest and interact with it. For the publisher, Google News includes elements of branding and different monetization options, among which ads and the sale of subscriptions stand out.

Through a tool called 'Publisher Center', users can share their content using feeds, URLs, or videos. In addition, even without setting up posts manually, Google News can include websites through the standard crawl that the platform carries out. In the event that a media opposes this indexing, access to the content by the tool can be denied without affecting the positioning in the traditional searches of the search engine.

Although, as we say, it is not necessary to register in the 'Publisher Center', doing so allows, among other advantages:

    • Greater control over the content that is published by customizing publications
    • Monetization options
    • Better positioning through the Play Kiosk service of the tool application

Why did Google News shut down in Spain?

The closure of Google News in Spain was carried out due to the so-called Intellectual Property Law (LPI) approved by the Spanish government, with entry into force at the beginning of 2015. With it, all publications were required to charge services such as Google News for the fact of showing any type of fragment of their content. This situation led Google to announce the closure of its news aggregator in this country.

At the time of the announcement of the new legislation, the automated news aggregator was still accepting requests from media outlets that wanted to participate in Google News, to finally announce in a statement the end of its activity on Tuesday, December 16, before the aforementioned law came into force, in January 2015.

This announcement coincided with a week in which much emphasis was placed on the closure of platforms of download links of well-known series and movies, such as Series.ly or Series Pepito. The application of the rule in the case of Google had more to do with the so-called AEDE canon, also included in this law, elaborated from a pact between some Spanish press publishers and the government itself. The decision to close was categorical, especially because it implied the obligatory payment by the company before any news that they linked. Fair covenant or blackmail?

Among the consequences of the closure of Google News in Spain were:

Fall in digital media traffic: according to different studies, Google News accounted for between 25 and 35% of the traffic of news websites. With its disappearance, traffic dropped considerably, suppressing its access through the platform. In fact, the closure coincided with a time when various media requested to participate in Google News with the aim of multiplying its reach.

Empty of alternatives: without similar platforms at the time of its existence, after the blow received, the appearance of alternatives was not even an option. The search engine suggested that Spanish users use their platform through Google News for Mexico, where they would still be able to access news in Spanish.

Increase in the monopoly of information: the disappearance was a major blow to the smaller media and bloggers, who found in Google News an accomplice with which to position themselves next to first-class media. Its disappearance meant larger portions of cake for fewer guests in control by the audiences.

    Google News returns to Spain

Almost seven years after everything that happened, the approval of the decree on copyright will allow the return of Google News to Spain, with an automatic reaction from the company, which announced through a statement the return of the news aggregator in January 2022.

The approval by Royal Decree imposes the European Directive on Copyright in the digital environment, adopted by the European Parliament in 2019. Thus, the mandatory collective management of these rights is abolished to allow each publisher to decide to manage them individually.

In the statement published by Google, it is explained that the new regulations will help readers find news from reliable and authoritative sources in the face of the lack of information control that society has experienced in the context of the health crisis caused by COVID-19. This return will benefit both larger websites and small, local and specialized publications, which the user will be able to reach with a simple click.

The use of Google News by hundreds of millions of people around the world will allow to incorporate – again – the Spanish public among its consumers, who will once again have links from a wide range of sources while the media will obtain an increase in traffic without any cost. The new law will allow Spanish media to decide how to share their content and monetize it.

On the other hand, the company anticipates that it is already working on the implementation of Google News Showcase, a program with which publishers are paid to select content for storyboards in Google News, underlining its commitment to sustainable journalism and an overwhelming fact: between 2018 and 2018, Google paid in Spain more than 130 million dollars to the five main news publishing network.
